The 12 Stages of Healing - Stage 1
The 12 Stages of Healing were developed by creator of NetworkSpinal chiropractic, Dr. Donald (Donny) Epstein.
They are a structured journey through awareness, integration, and wholeness, guiding individuals from suffering to personal empowerment and spiritual alignment.
These stages describe a natural rhythm of awareness, energy, and growth that every human being experiences throughout life. These stages unfold as consciousness evolves and as the body responds to internal and external experiences. Each stage offers insight, information, and opportunity for growth when it is met with presence and curiosity rather than resistance.
Each stage reflects a rhythm of consciousness shared across humanity. No stage carries more importance than another. Progress occurs through allowing rather than forcing. When a stage is acknowledged and honored, it completes itself and naturally gives rise to the next phase of healing. This process supports greater coherence within the body and clarity within awareness.
Breath and movement play an essential role in guiding this journey. Subtle shifts in posture, breathing patterns, and sensation provide cues for what the body is ready to experience. Even moments of discomfort carry valuable information. When these signals are met with attention and compassion, the healing process unfolds with greater ease and intelligence.
Stage 1: Suffering
Stage One reflects a moment of deep awareness that something feels off or disconnected. This experience differs from physical sensation and exists at the level of awareness. It often arises during times of loss, trauma, or significant life change. As consciousness expands, the recognition of this inner disconnect becomes clearer and more pronounced.
This stage creates an invitation to pause and listen. Rather than seeking immediate answers or solutions, awareness turns inward. The body and being communicate that something important is asking to be seen. This awareness marks the beginning of healing by bringing attention to what has been overlooked or suppressed.
The primary lesson of this stage involves acceptance. Effort, fixing, and control naturally soften here. The experience of helplessness carries meaning, signaling that old strategies no longer apply. Awareness itself becomes the first movement toward change, creating space for new organization within the body and nerve system.
One of the most meaningful aspects of this stage involves permission. Permission to slow down. Permission to feel without judgment. Permission to acknowledge vulnerability as part of growth. When this stage is honored fully, compassion deepens, clarity expands, and the foundation for the next stage of healing forms with greater stability and coherence.
